I left work a little early to procure some unusually delicious French salad dressing that I haven’t been able to replicate, and some white truffle oil from Feast, our local overpriced fine foods shop. I loved walking through the Main Street Market and could imagine spending many happy hours there and nearby in the niche shops and restaurants.
Instead there were routine errands for me and my Mom, and she was still seeking a suitable desk for her new office/sewing room that will hold all her stuff and provide some clear counter space for sewing. After our basic errands run, and with no joy previously at the office superstores or at the traditional bastion in Farmville, I suggested Under the Roof, right here on Main Street. Success! They are having a huge clearance sale, could get her a 3 piece set for less than a comparable item at Staples, and will deliver and assemble it for her, within 5 days. She was very happy and will soon have a lovely modern light maple desk to organize her office.
After that success, we headed just down the street to Zinc for a celebration dinner.
Zinc is an unusual restaurant–French menu, presented in a refurbished (slightly) auto garage. What used to be garage doors and car racks were turned into large windows, and the cinder block is disguised by paint and mirrors to cool effect. A highlight is the Zinc bar, a square room with ample seating and a big TV (Brazil vs. US tonight on FIFA football), but the main dining room is unique and charming. The wine list is much more extensive than the menu, always a good sign. I was in a bourbon mood so skipped the wine but Mom got a lovely white burgundy blend that was fresh and light. We both had the rockfish over arugula and tomato, and it was perfect, albeit delivered by a stoner waiter who’d obviously been stepping outside frequently! Zinc has a big patio that was empty when we arrived but had filled up by our departure and is anchored by a large, lovely traditional stone fountain.
Upon leaving, I counted at least 6 other restaurants filled with happy looking patrons which I am eager to visit soon. Main Street was obviously a happening place and dramatically changed from a dozen years ago when it was auto repair and parts shops, a few broken down bookstores, and junk shops.
