Entertainment and Self Mutilation

31 03 2008

It’s been a busy week.  I’ve seen several bands and had a good time.   But I’ve also had a lot of stressors at work and a home and am having to pedal hard to keep balanced enough to move forward on this bike.

So, the fun stuff first.  I saw a New York band, The Walkmen, on the night of my birthday.  They weren’t very memorable, although I’m always happy to be out.

They Might be Giants came to the Satellite, and they were big fun and it was a light and relaxed evening.  Their new stuff sounds quite like their old stuff, and it’s a little less sarcastic and erudite than Fountains of Wayne, but I was hoping for light and relaxed and that’s what it was.   They joke around and have lots of funny comments ranging from self-deprecating to sarcastic about the audience but it’s all friendly and not mean-spirited.    They may sound like they did 15 years ago, but it’s still entertaining!

The other night I saw the Whigs again, this time opening for the Drive by Truckers, at the new National Theater in Richmond.  They seem to have matured quite a bit in sound and in showmanship and seemed genuinely thrilled to be playing to a large audience in a fantastic room with great sound.

DBT was predictably awesome and put on a lengthy show that was even worth sacrificing my orange silk sweater to some spilled beer.   The National, recently completely renovated, is right next to my old credit union right on Broad St. in Richmond and represents part of the downtown arts rejuvenation going on in Richmond—pretty awesome results here.  I’d gladly go see more shows there.

Both boys played well this weekend, each scoring at least one goal.  Jamie got an assist and a goal and Tristan had 2 goals!  Both were thrilled and Tristan was very impressed that my friend J came over to watch his game.

And in between these fun activities, I foolishly tried to catch a sharp knife and instead speared my right index finger.  I knew right away it was bad, and nearly fainted when I looked at it trying to rinse it under some water.  I grabbed the phone and laid down while calling for help and stanching the bleeding with a cloth.  It was cut so badly it required 5 stitches, but I missed the tendon and got just to the bone.  After that one was stitched up, I also needed a stitch in the index finger, which is still hurting like hell.

At least I got to test out the ER functionality of my employer, and fortunately, I was impressed.   Today I’ll be testing their ability to respond to ongoing pain, numbness, and searing tingling in the index finger that at first, seemed less injured……however, I’m pretty down and grumpy with this pain so I’d like it to be reduced……
